The Future of Search Engines
There are many parts of our modern tech world that people didn’t expect. Furthermore, there are incredible leaps and bounds of the internet and beyond still unforeseen. This goes doubly in the world of search engines. In many ways, search engines and their parent companies know more about you than you do. They track nearly every segment of the internet and provide a packaged, categorized version. It is easy to understand how big tech companies abuse this info.
This goes to the heart of a number of recent court and legal cases. Regulators and legislators from various states and countries consider recent tech trends. There’s a lot to weigh. There are many potential effects. Furthermore, there are many aspects to the internet yet unknown.
Reuters reported on the most recent example.
Situation Unfolding with Google
EU judges now consider whether Google must remove search results. This follows a similar privacy ruling in France kicked up the chain to Brussels. Google denies its responsibility in the case. At the heart is the idea of ‘the right to be forgotten.’ French regulators already fined the company over $100,000 for not complying with delisting certain info. The fight started in 2014. Google refuses to delist information across national platforms on the site, like google.com in the United States, and google.fr in France.
Unfortunately, Google will not comply willingly. Furthermore, if recent precedent is any indication, the fight is far from over. In addition, Google is among the worst tech offender. European regulators have a lot to grapple with against a company with essentially unlimited pockets. However, they are also determined. Google may have met its match.
In conclusion, the issue is anywhere but settled. It unfolds over the next several years with effects spilling over the sea. US regulators look at the case very closely. Chances are there will be an American version of the right to be forgotten.
Keep it here for updates and more info as it comes out.
